Vitamin D

Is anyone out there feeling a bit low at this time of year? Chances are that your vitamin D level has dropped. We only absorb vitamin D through our skin in Ireland between March and October and tend to store it for only 3 months. Vitamin D is important for mood and bone health and evidence is showing it is protective against high blood pressure, certain forms of cancer and type 1 diabetes. Foods that contain vitamin D are fatty fish, fortified food (often dairy), beef liver, egg yolks and cheese.

Therefore if you are vegan, it is unlikely you will be getting any vitamin D through your diet. Recommended dose is 1000 IUSĀ  a day. It is a fat soluble nutrient so I recommend taking a supplement which comes in oil or taking in the liposomal form.
